A bracelet of identical design and patterning is described by Henri Vever in "French Jewelry of the 19th Century," page 619, and is known to have been the work of Eugène Fontenay. Fontenay was born in 1823 and had become an influential jeweler with a large workshop in Paris by 1860. He was known for jewelry influenced by antiquity, and was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Exposition in 1867. He was also a founding member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Bijouterie-Joaillerie-Orfèvrerie along with a group of fellow jewelers such as Frédéric Boucheron and Antoine Mellerio.
